The Lover by Marguerite Duras Tough call though, I had to decide between that one and France's Thais, which is another fantastic novel, though I think Duras wins slightly, so yeah, I nominate The Lover.

Duras's novel The Lover is great. I would love to re-read that.

I would like to nominate NOVEMBER by Gustave Flaubert.

Here's a summary of the book (it's actually a novella, 100 pages) on the back cover of my copy:

Wrestling with the agony of loneliness, a troubled man looks back over his youth, reliving his once-desperate quest for love. As he withdraws deeper into himself, believing he has now reached the autumn of his life, he recalls his all-encompassing yearning for romance - and how, tragically, it has now given way to an increasing hopelessness. He recalls, too, his once-held belief that the love of a woman could give him the purpose he so craved, and how, convinced with this truth, he visited Marie, a kind-hearted prostitute. Yet Marie, too, was starved of love and longing for acceptance. As his memories come to the fore, Marie and his younger self together form a tragic portrait of personal anguish - and provide the basis for Flaubert's extraordinary outpouring of romantic longing.

An intense, passionate, and profoundly moving work, Flaubert's November explores the notion of desire and longing to most remarkable effect.

Hello Lupe,

I am not sure what you mean by "classic" but it can be a recently published book as well.

Can anybody nominate a book?

If so, how about "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. I had a hard time deciding between that and Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, my all-time favorite play.

Hmm, I think you need 50 posts to nominate, but we'll let Scher decide when she comes back. Nonetheless it won't take long for you to accumulate 50 posts.

I know, Sher, I was half-joking, considering LitNet member's habbits and the three first nominations...;)

Oh darn, Pushkin! my favorite work - now I'm torn. And Jane Austen too! It's a shame we don't get such good nominations for the major book-club books, since this is only a one day one.

I'm definitely going with the Pushkin! So the deal is that the book needs to be read BY Febuary 14th? I'm pretty new to the forums, and especially new to the book club.

Then why did you vote for it, V? I was wondering if everyone voted for it, because of the new BBC production of 'Persausion'...the one everyone has been talking about recently.

you mean the one that was out last year? thought that was an itv production. very disapointing end. LW will agree with me on this one.

Because I didn't think it would win in April, so I might as well put a nail in the coffin now. I do really want to read another Austen novel.
