I have an assignment that I think will be so much fun. I have to make a book log of great books for children ages 3-5. There is a lot to it and I expect the project will end up taking me about six weeks to complete.

I wanted to know what books my fellow litneters remember from their early childhood or what they enjoy reading to young children now and why. I’m looking for books from every genre that address every topic. I hope everyone has something to recommend!

Thanks!

Cool thread motherhubbard :)

My daughter has just turned 5 and we're starting to read her longer stories now. So at the moment we're reading Finn Family Moomintroll which is really good, very imaginative and a little bit strange. But she is really enjoying it. My son, at a similar age, enjoyed the Thomas the Tank Engine stories and Mr. Men.

At an earlier age they both enjoyed most picture books, but particularly The Gruffalo and The Smartest Giant in Town, both by Julia Donaldson. They particularly enjoyed stories that rhymed or were particularly rhythmical like Commotion in the Ocean or Rumble in the Jungle by the guy who is otherwise known as Purple Ronnie but who's name I can't remember right now (do you know Purple Ronnie?).

Um, there are doubtless some more. I may have to scan the bookcase and come back to this...

Emily Brown and the Thing!

I dont' know Purple Ronnie. Please scan your bookcase and come back.

There are so many and I'm afraid I will forget and leave out some of my favorites.

Don't read Telegraph but found the list while doing a research not so long ago.

That's so great! I made a list today at amazon of 100 books. I may do a little switching around yet. I'm going to send this list you posted to my friend who is also in this same class. THen I'm going to study over the list and see what I need to add. Thanks so much!

Mo Willems is a family favorite - the entire Pigeon series (staring with Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus through the latest The Pigeon Wants a Puppy) is hysterical and very interactive. Leonardo the Terrible Monster and Knuffle Bunny are also great!

Sounds like a fun project!

Commotion in the Ocean and Rumble in the Jungle were written by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz.

Emily Brown and the Thing and This Rabbit belongs to Emily Brown were written by Cressida Cowell and Neal Layton

And some others:

Paddington Bear - Michael Bond
Hairy McClary series and Slinky Malinki series - Lynley Dodd

of course Roald Dahl (that list Scher gave is great) though I wouldn't have put The Twits as a 3-5 year old book, but would definitely include The Enormous Crocodile (which is brilliant) and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.

I also endorse Room on the Broom which my son loved but my daughter finds a bit scary (I think it's when I do my scary dragon voice ;) )

Dr Seuss (how could I forget!) and Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is pretty cool too.

I loved Milly Molly Mandy and Enid Blyton! They were awesome =D
I also liked stuff like La Comtesse de Segur and Jip en Janneke.
I may have also started reading Sweet Valley Twins and Babysitters' Club Books around about-ish that age.
There's Roald Dhal. My favourites of his were Matilda, The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach, and George's Marvellous Medicine.
Some of Jacqueline Wilson's books would be suitable for five year olds.

Anything from the Berenstain Bears collection. These are good for that age group. They deal with everything from school to chores to family to telling the truth to everything! I loved them. The stories are told in a way that I think really keeps a kid's attention. I always liked the drawings so much when I was a kid. There is always the plus of there being the moral at the end, too. :)

Yes, I was a Berenstain Bear fanatic when I was a kid. :D I still own all of my books, and believe me when I say that it kills me that I was never able to keep up with the collection. I am missing so many of them. :(
