Hi... I read a small short story (maybe a large essay) in 1957 and found it later in a collection and read it to my kids. I don't know the author or the title but the plot I do know.
There is a mom who insists on speaking only French to the baby/toddler, who has a sibling named Peter (Petah, as pronounced by the youngster) and a non-French speaking dad.
The mom goes away for a few days (or a day or a part of a day) leaving the French-speaking youngster in his care, with explicit instructions that turn out to be impossible to follow.
Needles to say (forgot my needless to sew with) it is hilarious... but alas, lost is the title and the author. Can anyone help?
