I have noticed that many of my favourite novels are set in the 50's and 60's America - often but not always, the characters reside in the south. Though it sounds strange, it seems to be a general trait they all share.

I love Faulkner ( among many others ) but would like any recommendations of books you can give me which fall under the above.
No more than two/3 - so i can get through them all.

Lord, i sound so weird... :\

Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey. Highly influenced by Faulkner, and one of my favourite books.

I am not really sure whether these recommendations of mine fit your description, but I would suggest Saroyan - My name is Aram or something by Styron - Sophy's choice....probably

It is not very well known, and it may be hard to find. But you might try Whitewater by Paul Horgan. It is set in 1950s west texas and is very american in a variety of ways.

I also thought of Larry McMurtry's The Last Picture Show - more teenagers coming of age in texas in the 1950s. :D

On the Road by Jack Kerouac, obvious choice. But an incredible book.

My suggestion is more an anthology but should quench your appetite for 50-60s America:

The Portable Beat Reader by Ann Charters (Editor)

We have a similar taste it seems :)

The Outsiders by S E Hinton
Try some Tennessee Williams plays- though I'm not sure what genre you like
To Kill A Mockingbird, I guess. I found it too sappy, but it fits your recommendations.
