Hello, I'm JC and I'm trying to write a sample college essay for my english class. However, I can't quite come up with anything. I know that many of you guys are or have graduated from college, so I though to ask for your help and some tips maybe.

Thank you, any help you provide will be tearfully appreciated!

The simple formula 'say what you're going to say, say it, and then say it again', seems to work.

Write a cool lead in sentence to catch the reader.
Make some kind of hypothesis or argument
Break it up into sections.

Argue your opinion for the argument for each section, backing up all you say with evidence from somewhere in the text .

Summarise your findings, discussing the significance of what you have written.

Is that what you mean by help? And does it?:)

Or do you want us to suggest topics?

Sure, if you'd be so kind. I want to write my own, of course, I just have the most awful case of writer's block!

Do you know what you're going to be writing about? Is it about you or something you are reading? Silas Thorne gave an excellent brief outline of how to go about it. When you get something written I can look at it, perhaps help with organization, ideas for lead sentences, endings, etc. I can help with editing, but based on your posts you don't need much help with that.

Do you have a topic or do you have to make your own? On what?

I guess it also depends on what type of college you are going to. If you're applying to one that stresses extracurricular activities and student involvement, then just be yourself, even though I know it sounds real cheesy. These schools want to know what type of person you are and what you have to offer to the school. Many won't be interested in essays in which you try to sound too smart and uncouth. Of course this doesn't work with all colleges, or all essay questions.
