:) but sowle2themax, the poetry of lotr is not in jackson's portrayal of middle earth, it is in the genius of tolkien. so i recommend it highly, as someone who read each book circa 6 times plus well before the movies were ever shot.

I recently read Native Son. It took a while to pull me in, but it was definitely worth it once that happened. I can't remember for sure but it seems like it was in the '20s or '30s... If you liked it, I'd definitely recommend Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man". I believe Wright helped Ellison along, but I found Invisible Man to flow a lot better than Native Son. It's got his jazzy beat in the writing.
Or if you didn't like it... Hmm, well I recently read Robert Graves "I, Claudius" and its follow-up "Claudius the God", and I had a hard time putting either of them down. They're set in Rome from the time of Augustus through Caligula, if I recall correctly, and they're packed full of Lord of the Rings-scale events. They just happen to be based on history / historical writings.

I read a couple of Goosebumps back in day. If you like LotR, but don't want to read them (shame on you!) you could give Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series a look. Thats a series that is sure to keep you going for a loooooooooong time. ;)
