Are there any differences in terms of plot between the book and the film?

I can't imagine they sing that hot chocolate song, nor does the book's conductor sound like Tom Hanks. ;)

If I remember correctly, as it has been years since I have read the book, the movie follows the plot, if a bit loosely. Everything in the book is in the movie, but not everything in the movie is in the book. Quite a lot that is in the movie isn't in the book, actually. If they made a movie from the book material alone, I doubt it would have been much longer than 30 minutes. It is similar to what they did with How The Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carey, though they don't get quite as carried away.

Both the movie and book are excellent.
