Hi, has anybody read Sigrid Undset's novel KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER? I was interested in the first place because a) it won the Nobel prize and b) it has great reviews in Amazon.

But I just started, and to be honest the character Kristin is annoying -- I can't relate to her at all. For example, she's not modest and maybe a bit arrogant, like when some dude said, "You have blossomed into a beauty" or something like that, she says, "Yeah I know."

I loved Scarlett O' Hara in Gone With the Wind, but I don't know if I can like Kristin -- she's rather annoying and too perfect so far.

Can someone convince me if I will like this book and character if I keep on reading? It's pretty thick, so... And I'm a bookworm so I will give almost any author a chance.

THANKS.

Well, you should bear in mind that buying a book by a Nobel Prize winner hardly guarantees you'll be making a good purchase... Check the list of Nobel winners since the award was created and you'll see what I mean... Many are or will soon be forgotten --- and with good reason :)

I read 'Gunnar's Daughter' a long time ago. I don't remember much about it, but I have the distinct feeling that it was for the most part a real bore...

I recommend you to keep on reading (seriously). I read it in it`s original language (norwegian) though, but the english translation is good.

I recommend you also to check out "Growth of the Soil" by Hamsun.
