The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder is really good. It's follows the format of an advent calendar, so there's a chapter a day in the run up towards Christmas.

Grisham's witty novel "Skipping Christmas" - I know it's not a deep read, but rather light and funny, but I was thoroughly entertained and I had never really read a Grisham novel before; only knew the films his novels are based on. It is short book and goes along quickly. They made a film on this one, but the book is waaay better. I had a smile on my face through most of the pages. A very nice read for this stressful time of year - the book has real 'heart'....and it surprised me - it was very well written. I don't usually deviate from classics but how many times can one read the same classics over and over again. I love "A Christmas Carol" and O'Henry's short story - "Gift of the Magi", but there is a limit to exposure. Something a little new and different was sort of nice the year I read the Grisham book.

Another one you might consider is Hardy's light hearted novel - "Under the Greenwood Tree"... it begins at Christmas with carolers and it goes through all of the four seasons - brilliant in my mind. Lovely story and fun read. The BBC adaptation I just purchase is excellent - follows the story quite faithfully - way to go BBC, you never fail to amaze me. I loved the book and the movie!
