My poetry professor gave me some excellent advice.

He told me that when writing poetry, if I attempt to express the big things in life, if I attempt to expound upon love or the meaning of life, or the lows of heartbreak, then I have thousands of years of competition.

His advice was to show us the big things by focusing on the little things. Don't come out and tell us about your heartbreak or sadness or gleeful first kisses. Show us in the little things. Be as subtle as possible.

That was his advice, and when I remember to heed it, it helps me.

And as I was reading some of the personal poetry here, I thought I ought to pass it along.

Keep writing, poets!
We'll keep reading!
