There were some questions our teacher wanted us to discuss about and I'm curious as to what people here think about Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The following questions allow us to think more deeply and more "out of the box". Enjoy!

1. Why are the boys not given second names apart from Jack and Percival?

2. Why are there no girls or adults who survive the crash?

3. How come the passenger tube lands, ejects the boys and then is dragged out to sea so that it cannot provide any source of shelter or supplies?

4. Why is the island so isolated in that so few ships pass by?

5. If it is isolated how can two fighter planes be fighting over it so that the parachutist suddenly lands on teh mountain?

6. Where do the pigs come from?

7. Why is Piggy the only one with glasses and the only one that does not go to public school?

Okay, you don't have to answer all of them, but starting a discussion about these questions would be nice.. The one which baffles me the most is number 6, and it is actually, a genuine question! I would appreciate all the help you guys can give me, and hopefully we will all learn something more in the process.

Thanks!

Maybe you could start by giving us your ideas, or the answers you've thought of for those questions... :)

I wish I could help you, but it's so long since I've read the dern thing, that I've forgotten most of the themes...

Sorry.

Cheers. :bawling:

Aren't all the boys from an all boys private school or something? If so, that'd help you on a few of those questions...

Not your work force... Go read the book on your own

I commend you thinking that people at LitNet will answer those questions for you, but I think you'll be wrong!

:D

That said, I'll give you a few pointers so you can think of answers:

1. Why are the boys not given second names apart from Jack and Percival?

In the prevailing culture, two names would only have been needed to separate two people with the same first name, so not needed.

2. Why are there no girls or adults who survive the crash?

Reading the book will give you this answer, along with other answers you're looking for.

All of those questions relate to the plot the author had in mind, so you can only answer them by thinking about what the author was trying to tell us (that people without morals become nasty quite quickly) and why he used characters and objects the way he did.

For instance, if the accident had occurred in a busy shipping lane, it would be a very short story.

Because it's a work of fiction, you will have to think about the answers and write down what you discover.

The only other one I'll give you is #6. Lots of islands have pigs on them. How'd they get there? I don't know, but be creative, and yes, pigs can swim.
