Long Before

Through the fields
Across the mountains
Under the ocean
We roam
To the place where children are
But a shadow on the sun
Reminds me of a place I knew
Although I have never been
Reminds me of the souls that fell
Along this road of sin

Long before there were windmills in Holland
Long before there was water in the sea
Long before a woman gave an apple to a man
Long before a speck of dirt set off a big bang

Walked on these holy streets
Where gods and goddesses
Petty and jealous fought
Over the right to use humans as slaves
To their divine vanity
And wading through the waters of death
To the other side
I see you standing with your burning eyes
My body on the pyre

Long before there was language
Long before there was a wall in germany
Long before a tupeloian was a hit
Long before there was greed in every heart

Spoke so softly to my teacher
Who made me tell him all that I knew
About an angel that had your name
And had done the things you do
The ultimate act of betrayal
The saving grace
The dreams that mortals dare not to dream
For fear grows in every shadow
Across your marble face

Long before a man was betrayed with a kiss
Long before the laws were set in stone
Long before a ladder descended from the clouds above
Long before the scriptures were fabricated

Gave up my longing for need
Gave up my heart for bread
Lived alone in paradise
Never once feeling bad
Broke my wedding vows with glee
Even after death I would not part
One who is such as you
And angel with a demon’s heart
And a game with no stop or start

Long before an ebony bird perched on the bust
Long before hunger corrupted the children’s minds
Long before all roads lead to rome
Long before the answer was forty two

So now I sit in aimless privacy
I know the direction I wish to go
My body rotting at the thought
Of another night without the moon
The thought of you keeps me warm
In the burning night
Here I am in you hands
But you will never touch me
For I am a wraith of obscurity

Long before the celestial symphony sang its song
Long before the nomad found a home
Long before two lovers bade fare well from a Veronan windowsill
Long before the mountains scratched the sky

And now if these words give you hope
Or leave you feeling blue
Tell me what thy poisoned name is
That I may bow to you
And if you should utter a syllable
That makes up my wretched name
Stand and be judged ye heathens of God
For the pagan rituals were false
And love floods the land

Long before the nameless was named
Long before the sea parted in two
Long before a serpent whispered your name
To me in the night of discontent

Search through many a volume
My name you will not see
For I am life and I am death
To all those who believe in me
My body drools on the sidewalk
Where the pilgrims step over me
For who am I to complain with these lips
That were crafted
For a fool like me

Long before there was a Mecca for the dreamers
Long before there was holy union on earth
Long before black and white were separated
Long before when there was only love
