What happened to Winston's mother and sister? Did she leave him because he was a resentful pig? or was she captured by someone?

I believe Orwell does not tell us what happened to them on purpose. I think he leaves two possibilities open. 1. They both left him because he was such a hog. 2. His mother and sister were taken away to a work camp or something of that order. He wants us to decide for ourselves and show us what a heartless society it was.
Winston isn't sure what happened to his Mother and sister. When he returns home after running away with the chocolate:idea::confused:, they are just gone. He suspects maybe his sister was taken to a camp, and his mother maybe vaporized. Or maybe they were both sent to a camp. He will never know what happened to his mother and sister.

I agree with ¡Finallyworked, but I also think that Orwell wanted to show the burden and remorse Winston carried for stealing his sister's candy and then coming back to see that both his mother and sister had vanished while he was gone.

I believe that they left, but not on there own accord, i think that they were forced to leave. Like it says in the book Winston believes that they were sent to forced labour camps to work. Or possibly vaporized.

Agree with all of the above and I think it's been thoroughly explained. Though Winston thinks they were brought to forced labor camps we can probably guess they were vaporized.
