I have to write a paper for History class and I dont know where to start. The question is "Discuss, using ample and specific examples from the text, how Orwell in 1984 directly challenges the idea of progress in Western Civilization?" I need help with this paper.

When you have a prompt like that, you want to make sure to open the paper answering it. Never restate the prompt, but answer it. Make your thesis clear and concise. In your paper be sure to include the time the book was written under, and facts about Orwell's life. Try to find something unique to include in your paper so your teacher doesn't read the same thing over and over again.
Think about Hitler in comparison to Big Brother and what was going on Russia.

Well, learn the history aspects, most importantly, but know the book as well.
Find the parallels in the novel and you should be fine.
It's really easy too.
Once you read teh novel and do a lil research to back up any claims you may find while reading, you'll start writing and the next thing you know - POOF - you'll be done!
Good luck!!!
