What would you do if the world was like the world in 1984? I mean, not being able to show emotion for me would be unbearable. I think that would be the worst thing. Emotion is one of the most important attributes to us. Emotion is a big factor in what makes us human. In 1984, the Party tries to remove many traces of what makes people human such as emotion and certain words are replaced and removed. What would be the worst thing for you if the world was like it is in 1984? I'd like to see other's perspectives on this, maybe some feel that in some ways the world in 1984 is... better in some ways?

Are you a Prole or a Party member?
If you are Prole, you can have emotions. If you are a Party member, then you're feelings were controlled.
So it's real, not what would it be.

i think bazarov is right the proles were truly free and could have control of all their own emotions as long as they stayed "low".the removal of human responses was kept for the two million or so party members.
ignorance is strength does state though that nepotism has been eradicated in favour of examination in to the party ranks, and that racism has become extinct in oceania.these could be construed as an improvement on todays society.
there does seem to be many misconceptions about 1984 in todays media,
bb only watched you if you were of any danger to the party.85% of the populus lived without interference, maybe pretty similar to todays world.

I would go for Prole, at least I would be able to feel. We may not live in a world of 100 per cent freedom, but I prefer this than that of the Party member in 1984 where there is no freedom and the emotion to desire it is denied.

I believe I would want to be an Inner Part member. As Machiavelli said "It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both."

The only problem with that ideal is that the more you are feared, the more protection you will need as you will become a bigger target for your enimies.

Inner Party members have no enemies, nor are they ever likely to have any.

The only enemies the Inner Party has are the rebellion. These people are about 3 or 4 people who haven't been "fixed" by the Party. These people also don't really hate the Inner Party. They hate Big Brother.
