Why does winston take julia to O'briens, this seems like pure folly and out of character for him with regards to him in the rest of the book?

And why does winston agree to O'briens long list of atrocities including throwing sulphuric acid in a childs face, and the murder of hundreds of innocent people? This also seems totally out of character for Winston.

He thought he'd found a comrade.

That's the whole point. It shows the depth of Winston's hatred and determination to attack the Party.

what does throwing acid in a childs face have to do with going against BB? I could see a child that was a spy I somthing for the party!!

I can see he thought he found a comrade in O'brien but winston was not sure about him and his deep feelings for julia may have at first made him more wary maybe not to betray her to an inner member of the party.
This said it is essential that both are discovered as unorthodox for the conclusion to the book.
Winston appears thoughtful and helpful to his neighbours in the early stages of 1984 but the two minutes of hate certainly raise distressing feelings in him, it is possible if the child was a spy he would act out O'briens orders, this is uneasy reading considering the development of the characters i think.
Thankyou for taking time to consider my enquiries athiest and skisurfer.

It doesn't!

You're missing the point that it's a hypothetical situation put to W to assess his strength of feeling against the Party. His agreement shows that he would cast aside his own morals to hurt the Party, and this is used against him later.

O'Brien asks this to find out the extent of Winston's disloyalty. Each hypothetical situation was crucial for O'Brien's assessment of Winston. It has nothing to do with going against Big Brother. If your not that far in the book read further and you will be enlightened. :D
