I had nutella for the first time today. WOW! I had no idea it was so good. At first I just tried a little taste but then I just kept going back to the jar. I finally left the room to keep from eating more. It’s just a little bit of Heaven.

The first time I had nutella was inside a warm crepe I bought from a street vender in Paris, and I think my favorite way to eat it is still in homemade crepes with strawberry or banana. It's pretty great stuff on just about anything, though...or by itself. Maybe Virg. has the right approach with the straight off the knife technique.

Nutella is the brand name of a hazelnut-based sweet spread created by the Italian company Ferrero in the 1940s. At the time, chocolate was very limited due to World War II. Nutella is now marketed in over 75 countries across the globe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutella

they're the same who produce Kinder Surprise Eggs. I think they are banned in the U.S. due to the possibility of toddlers swallowing the parts of the toys that are inside?

do you get Kinder chocolate (also by Ferrero) in the US at all?

I like nutella too, but am far from being an addict. There's some in the delicious little Ferrero rochers too, yum.

But Kinder products....aaaaaah, to die for. Are the Kinder eggs really banned in the US?

Wow, I can't believe I'm posting after a non Nutella lover. Up until now I thought it was the universal and perfect food that would unite the whole world in joy and friendship. After all, even Virg. and I would both vote for Nutella in a national election. ;) Just another utopian ideal crushed. :bawling:

Back to the more serious issue of kinder chocolate. I was totally addicted to Kinder Bueno when I was in Italy. I've never come across it in the United states, though. Ferrero Roche on the other hand...it's a good thing I'm not trying to go on a diet or something. This thread is throwing way too much temptation in my way. I've never seen the Kinder Eggs, Sleepy. That is such a great idea. Poor little US children. Less choking but also less fun. :p

I'm late joining in, but I still wanted to share my love of nutella!

In the absence of crepes (nutella and banana is my favorite!) and fresh bread, I think nutella is quite good on top of Thomas' English muffins. Since they have more substance than your average loaf of store-bought bread, it works better I think.

I don't think I could eat it plain, though. That would be too much for me. :p

From what I've read, you can get it in some places in the U.S. but it is very rare and very expensive. That's why you should come to Australia where there are heaps, and they're one of the cheapest chocolates around!! :D

The Italians love their Nutella - you can even get it in restaurants, which I found hilarious. Basically I equate it to the European version of Peanut Butter, except chocolate-butter.

I can't eat Nutella with just a spoon though, I need something to spread it on. I would say one of the best ways to eat it is on French crepes. Really. I think I said that already but you can never say it enough. ;) What I can eat directly with a spoon though, is chocolate powder, you know, the one you blend with milk to obtain milk chocolate. Nesquik, it's called:

http://media.telemarket.fr/imgnwprd/000/000256/00025640/00025640-t0.jpg

The homemade truffle idea is quite interesting, given the actual cost of the French import, but dark chocolate and nutella do not have the same texture, consistency, or taste.

I think the nutella as recycled treat idea would be closer to graham crackers, or ginger cookies, diced banana, and mini marshmallows, because really good dark chocolate is too rich to be ingested in anything but small bites, and it cannot be over-indulged and still truly be enjoyed, not to my sense.

Nutella is not quite so loaded.

We nicknamed my daughter Nutella when we went to salzburg a few years ago due to her predilection for it. We nicknamed m son Stollen. I was dying to introduce them by saying:
"This is my son Stollen and this is my daughter Nutella" to anyone who would listen, but I didn't get a chance.
