Back in fifth grade, my class read a book and its title completely escapes my memory. It was a children's book--pretty short, unless I am forgetting a whole lot--about people traveling to colonize another planet. Earth was going to be destroyed by a meteor, I think. Anyway, they arrived at the planet pretty early in the book and begin to try to live there, but they have a hard time making food grow and all the crops turn glass-like and seemingly inedible. The colony thinks it is going to perish because they can't grow food and...I'm not sure how it winds up after that. I think they somehow wind up grinding up their glass-like plants and eating them, but it's all very vague. I can't remember more than that, except that I think the book was in first person.
I hope that's enough to tip off someone else who has read it. It's really quite annoying, not being able to come up with this title.
