Horror films from Books - Who wrote the Werewolf stories?

Most of the early horror films were based on classic books: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Muumy and Jekyl & Hyde to name but a few. So, where did the original Wolfman stories come from, were they from some classical literature or was it just a screen writers imagination with the use of supertition research thrown in? I would like to know as I have read the above but not come across any original Werewolf/Wolfman stories.

I don't know about those stories, but there was a real-life episode that took place in eighteenth-century France which has inspired at least one movie --- a very bizarre one starring Vincent Cassel. There was some kind of huge wolf-like beast that killed and maimed lots of people, but it was never caught and no one knows what it was. It was called the Beast of Gevaudan.

Thanks I will have to look that up. I have always been interested in horror movies and where the stories come from.

When Universal Pictures developed their Lyle Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) series of Wolf Man movies he was created for that venue and not based on any particular story/book ala Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. Whereas vampires have abounded in literature th werewolves are sorely underrepresented. One very good werewolf story simply called The Werewolf by Clemence Houseman is a favorite to read and reread.
