The name rolls off her tongue and shivers go down her spine. The sensations cause goose bumps to arise.
Ta..Da..Shi..
How could she ever forget such a name.
Ta..Da..Shi..
She recites it over and over, squeezing her pillow tight. She closes her eyes and starts to drift off into a slumber.
It was a fine summer morning, July 5th to be exact. She wakes up to find that she is alone. Her heart tears a little. She thought they had a moment. She thought last night meant something to him, too. So why was she alone now?
She gets up and creeps around her Kuya's house, counting the heads that have passed out on the floors from last night's drunken merriment. She wonders if she too was just drunk last night, or perhaps he was. Her heart sinks at the notion that last night might have just been a one night stand.
But she felt something, and it wasn't the alcohol. She closes her eyes and reminisces the moment he looked into her eyes and whispered, "Suki desu." She did not know what he meant, but it sounded so lovely.
She decides to look for him, amongst the scattered sleeping drunks in the den. She wonders why he would be here when they had had their own little room. The notion of a one night stand drags her heart down even more.
She goes over to her Kuya's room, perhaps they're up chatting. She finds her Kuya sleeping soundly. She gazes over to the sliding door leading to the backyard.
Oh what gorgeous colors the sky had become, of pink, lavender, and royal blue. She walks over to the sliding door and presses her palms up against the glass. Wonderful, absolutely stunning. The first rays of the sun start to fall upon the backyard deck. She follows them with her eyes and finds Tadashi in the corner, basking in the light.
Tadashi.
She hesitates and debates if she should approach him. But before she could make up her mind, their eyes meet, and he smiles at her. She takes it as a sign to join him.
She takes a good look at him before she walks over. He was beautiful, almost angelic. Dressed in a white t-shirt and white shorts, the sun's rays seemed to glow off him. He had a white aura surrounding him. She etched that moment in her mind, for she knew this may be one of the last days they would ever see each other.
She sits besides him, and he casually wraps his arm around her.
"Its 6am, what are you doing up and out here for?"
"To watch the sunrise to remember this day, of course."
"What's so special about this day? And why do you need to watch the sunrise to remember it?"
"Silly Layla, you're always so full of questions. That's why..." He laughs and touches the tip of her nose with his finger. "Suki desu."
"Just wondering, is all." She still did not know what suki desu meant, and she was too shy to ask.
"Layla, I watch the sunrise to remember special days in my life because my mother used to tell me this story about a boy would could not remember."
She furrows her eyebrows and looks at him with curious eyes. She wants to hear the story.
"There once was this boy who was completely normal, except for the fact he could not remember. He spent every day doing things over and over again because he could not remember doing them before. His parents gave up all hope to try to regain his memory. One day, a family of nomads came to their door, asking for shelter from the monsoon. They had a little girl, around the boy's age. The boy couldn't believe how beautiful the girl was. Granted he's never seen a girl his age, not that he would remember anyway. He ended up spending the whole day with the girl, enjoying her company. He never wanted to forget her, but he knew as soon as he fell asleep, he would. He confesses to her his predicament. The little girl first laughs, thinking it was a joke. But his sad eyes revealed he was telling the truth. The girl then suggests for him not to go to sleep and that she will help him stay awake. If he didn't sleep, then maybe he would remember. He goes along with the idea, and they stay awake the rest of the night. Dawn finally approaches, and their last bits of energy are slowly fading away. They lean against each other and watch the first glimpses of the sun's rays painting the sky. The two marvel at the beauty of it, but then they soon drift off to sleep. The boy finally wakes up a few hours later, and he looks at the girl who has rested her head against his lap. His faces lights up. It wasn't a dream, and he remembered her. He nudges her awake, exclaiming, 'Chiyo, Chiyo! I remember you! I remember!' She opens her eyes and smiles dreamily, 'Of course you remember, you never forget your first love.' And from that day on, they awoke every morning to see the sun rise together, remembering the day he never forgot."
Layla's eyes start to well up, and she feels as if she was choking on air. She gasps, "Oh wow, that story was beautiful, so romantic."
"I know. I loved that story, and so that's why I always like to watch the sunrise."
Her heart skips a beat. She ponders if he was hinting something to her. "Tadashi, what does suki desu mean?"
He smirks at her and asks, "What did you feel when I said it?"
"What kind of answer is that? I'm just asking you to translate." She thinks about it though. She did feel all warm and happy inside, as if she was in love. Suki desu, suki desu, suki desu. Each time she repeats the phrase to herself, her heart beats faster and faster. Suki desu.
He touches her chin gently and turns it to face him, “Suki desu, Layla.” He smiles so radiantly at her, and she looks so quizzically at him.
“Tadashi, seriously, what does it mean?”
“Whatever you feel, Layla. Whatever you feel.”
She looks up at the sky, the sun’s rays are making the colors more vivid and brighter. She closes her eyes and rests her head on his shoulder. She smiles to herself, and she drifts off to sleep.
She wakes up, finding herself holding the pillow. She was just dreaming, but it felt like déjà vu all over again.
Tadashi.
She looks out the window and finds the first rays of the sun painting the sky pink, lavender, and royal blue. Ah, the sunrise, the sunrise she will never forget.
“Tadashi, suki desu,” She murmurs to herself.
Tadashi has been long gone. He was but a summer love, but he was her first love. He came to visit her every summer after their initial meeting, but the time and distance slowly took a toll on her. After three summers, she finally realized she had to let him go. She requested Tadashi to never see her again, even though she knew he still came every summer. It was best she let go. After all, they still had the sunrise.
