If you invite someone to go see a movie you might say "Let's go to the movies" but if you live in a large city there might be a few theaters so this begs the question "where?"

Now, 'the' is a definite article so there should be no question as to where you are going but there is a question. So maybe a better way to ask is "Let's go to a movies".

Do you mean "Let's go to a movie?" Grammatically, that makes more sense but still doesn't narrow down your choices. In fact, it broadens them.

In this case I think "the movies" is definite. "The movies" being an activity not necessarily a place. You have chosen the movies over something else like "a ballgame" or "the discotech"
