Any of you lovely people enjoyed the book "1984" by George Orwell? If so please blog back to me and get into an epic discussion about the novel. I feel that this book greatly reflects how the government could have that power and control of the people. It also some what reflects on history to a certain degree.
Thanks, JB

Although 1984 was not my favorite book, I like the fact that it makes the reader think about what has happened in the past, what is happening in the present and what will happen in the future. The people in the book either ignore the fact that history is being rewritten, or they have no idea what is going on. The people who do know that history is being rewritten, "forget" that it ever happened, so the new story becomes the past. The government can then present history however they want. This makes the "past" mistakes that have been rewritten and "forgotten" repeatable because people do not know/forget that these mistakes were ever made.

I like this. This book would make my top 10, but not number one. This is becoming more and more comparable to today's society and government (but we can't talk about the government aspect). It's very interesting to compare it to today and see what comparisons other people can make. As I believe Orwell intentioned we are the Proletariat. The Party members are harder to compare. I can;t think of any group of people the Party members relate to in today's society. Anyone want to give their opinion?

When the bomb goes off in the prols section and winston almost dies why is it that he feels no emotion. He sees a sever ate hand and just kicks it into the gutter. Another example is when he first sees julia he wants to rape her then kill her. Why is this man so shut down from any human emotion? Has big brother angered him so much that he has no regard for any other human life besides him self?

He is designed to not have emotions, and bombing is thing what they use to live.

He has no emotion because Big Brother has snatched all fo it from the middle class society only the Proles carry emotion now Big Brother fills the middle class with hate, anger, and even depression, the people get to the point where they just dont care any longer..

I admire O'Brien.
He is completely in control of himself and the idea of Doublethink. As a result, he gains immortality for himself as part of the Party apparatus.
Nasty, but clever.
The idea of bad things sounding good is the central tenet of Orwell's use of propaganda being used by the Party. After the Concentration Camps were discovered at the end of WWII, I think the entire world came to accept that people can be conned into anything.
