I am reading George Orwells 1984 in my 10th grade English class. Now i personally believe im a old enough to read this book, but of course there are some kids that will snicker when speaking about pornosec or the 50 year old prostitute. Now i know both of those repreasent something, but i even think some of the things in this book are a little inappropriate. But i was talking to my mom about the book because she was wondering what we were reading, and she wasn't very happy about it, no matter how i tried to explain we are old enough and mature enough to handle it. I am just curious what ages you think are appropriate to read this book?

This I believe is appropriate for even mature 8th-9th graders. The reason behind this is that we already know all that stuff from Health back in Middle School. It's a very important piece of literature. There are very little inappropriate parts of this book for that age level. These things only re-enforce the points Orwell is making. The seemingly inappropriate parts aren't that inappropriate. Orwell does not go into vivid detail about these things and it's only for a short period of time that that these things are expressed.

I read 1984 when I was in the tenth grade. I thought it was so boring I don't even remember the parts you are talking about. So you should be fine. It would be fun to know what your mother had to read in the 10th grade.

I'm also in 10th grade i think its appropriate but extremely boring. We can handle this whats the difference between this and Flowers for Algernon? It had the same amout of sex and drinking involved. Did your mother have a problem with that? 1984 is a very important piece of literature and your mother should be happy you are reading such an advanced book. This book has a little bit of everything in it sex, drinking, breaking the rules, finding out the truth, hope, and government. Its a variety and isnt that what makes a good book?

I completly agree with you this book is about more than drinking and sex it's about Orwell trying to show us things about our past and our future.those things are little minor things within the book the relationship between julia and winston is important because it hepls orwell show how the Party has complete control over everyhing even sex, they have turned it into an meaningless emotional thing. That is seen as dirty. Anyway I belive it is suitable for most 9or 10th graders as long as they come away from it knowing what orwell is saying or warning!

There isn;t an ideal age, and if there is, it's probably much later. Personally, I'd rather the book was left until uni level because I think an understanding of politics helps understanding of the book.
Funny you mom has problems with prostitutes and sex being mentioned. Ask her about sex and prostitutes in the bible.

That's why I think it should be left until later. I certainly didn't appreciate it at 15/16.

I enjoyed it the first time I read it, around 15-16. I thought it was hard to get into at the beginning, but once in your in and your there to stay until the very end. It's suitable for younger ages, but you may not understand or enjoy it as much if read at a later age.

Your probably right. I would probably appreciate it alot more when im older, but i do underatand the points Orwell is trying to make, well to a certain degree. I dont think it is really "boring", but i think when he wrote this book he tried to i guess, "write" it boring to give the reader a sense of feeling on how he perseeved life would be like, with everyone the smae. No individuality or free thought. All i know is his use of words gives me the HeebyJeebys. Someone always looking down your back. I read this and i have the feeling i am being watched, like the people are with the telescreen.
And my mom isnt totally against me reading it and wants to go to the school and complain or anything. Shes just not too happy. But i think she thinks i am too young, even though, you know, i am in highschool, and we here this kinda of "topic" everyday.
:crash: Ha i love this Smilie =D
