On page 44, Winston and Syme are getting their meals at the Ministry of Truth. It says that they received a metal pannikin of pinkish-gray stew, a hunk of bread, a cube of cheese, a mug of milkless Victory Coffee, and one saccharine tablet.

What do they mean by, or what is, a saccharine tablet?

Saccharine is a sugar substitute which is no longer used.

Saccharine is kind of described later when Winston gets some real sugar. As The Atheist said saccharine is like a sugar substitute, just like the fake coffee and fake tea.

When Winston and Syme sit down to eat lunch Syme then tells him about newspeak and how it's progress is comming along. Syme tells Winston that he dosent really apresciate newspeak could this be a clue to Syme that Winston is against big brother?

I think that when Winston doesn't show interest when Syme is explaining how faithful he is to Newspeak, it DOES give Syme the hint that Winston is against Big Brother. But maybe Syme didn't catch it, as he was still going on about his duty to Newspeak.

I have only read the first 8 chapters but do u think this could be forshadowing, Winston might end up vaporized if he isn't carfull about how he shows his emotions or lack of emotions in this case twords big brother and newspeak?:flare:

This could happen to anyone if they are not careful. Keep reading and you be enlightened. :)

Showed Syme's single-minded attention to the language. Didn't help him much.

Too much focus and knowledge doesn't seem to get you anywhere in Orwell's world.
