I believe that the book is of major contrast to the freedom of speech which we all enjoy today.Big Brother has a plan to eliminate not only the ability to speak but also think. The goal is to eliminate the resources for which someone could question authority or the way things are done.Any thoughts?:p

First off he must be smart to become a dictator. But the way he uses new speak to just control every one and what the say is genius from his perspective. If the people cant speak about revolting they never will and he can just control till the day he dies.

this doesnt quite answer the question I proposed though I agree with you somewhat. You cant under estimate the people. They may appear to be brainwashed and under control but you cannot rule out completly the chance of rebellion and the over throwing of big bro.

The point of newspeak is to limit what the people of Oceania can think and say. Eventually, all thoughts and plans of rebellion will be impossible because the words used to express those ideas will not exist. The people of Oceania do not have rights such as free speech, and those who have the power or thoughts to rebel are too afraid (Winston) or ignorant (proles) to do so.

Well put, :), this way of speaking carries on to future generations and if people can't think or speak with any emotion or expression there will be no need for vaporization and hangings. Thought crime won't exist and the Party will have complete control.

you didn't really ask a question, you asked for our opinion on your statement. If you have a question, please, share.

Say you were born and raised in the southern states and you were bread by your parents to hate African Americans. You can't go around cussin' them out all day and making fun of them. This was like in 1984 were you couldn't say anything against the government that made them look bad or showed any sign of rebellion. Freedom of Speech is not actually freedom of speech. It is freedom of limited speech. ;) Mr ;) tacoandburrito has made it easy for me to agree with him.
