just wondering if i can get some anwsers here i have read the book, but not understood it too well.***** Does winston rebel against big brother for noble reasons or for his own selfish reasons? if anyone has some examples of either of these they would be extremly helpful!****************************************** ********************** -Cheers FastCash
I think you could say that his reasons are noble rather than selfish:
He is interested in truth, not a concept which benefits him personally.
He swears to commit any atrocity in the name of the fictitious Brotherhood, but when W believes it, his attitude is selfless, not selfish.
He is after proof of the past, again a selfless attitude.
I think he ends up being a little selfish, but only due to his hormones, and as Julia is described as being quite pretty, who the hell's gonna blame him?!

He also wrote the diary for the future didn't he? He didn't succeed but he wrote it for O'brien and the future generations. I didn't really find Winston's intentions selfish at all. Julia just made it another reason to rebel.
