Hey, I am a student who suppose to study ESL, but study English instead. Thus, some English work is a bit hard for me.

Our task this term is to read Geogre Orwell's 1984, I have finished reading it, of course, with help of some information from this site. However, I still have problem with some of the issues.

First of all, my biggest concern is my essay writing, topic of which is "How and why does the Party maintain control over Oceania?" Here is my points of view:
1. The Party employs Telescreen, Thought Police, Room 101, Youth agents, Propaganda, Big Brother, Newspeak, etc. to control people's mind, to restrict people's activity, to eliminate people's instinct.
2. The reason that the Party maintain control over Oceania is to gain absolute power.

Can anyone please help about my agruments? Which THREE agruments would be the best ones to answer the question? And is there any additions to my points of view?

Please answer my questions ASAP as my English essay is on this coming Thursday, 30th October.

Thank you very much for taking your time reading and answering my questions.

p.s. I also need some help about the definition of Doublethink. I kinda get what it means, but I don't get how it helps the Party to limit people's mind.

The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them....To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.

from 1984, about Doublethink.

I've found nice site, good explanation with numerous examples of Doublethink in real life ( like Orwell is not real enough :D)
http://www.orwelltoday.com/doublethink.shtml

Shortly, people are not dumb, they are just stupid :D, and they see some Party actions like wrong, but Doublethink makes them believe that it's just like it should be and that that is only possible rational act with good explanation by Party agents. Ministries are best examples; Ministry of Peace is in infinite War etc.

Your views and arguments are correct, short and simple:thumbs_up

Three arguments are not problem, but I don't see your question?:)

about absolute power: I think it would be beneficial in your essay to include that in oceania, money isnt power like it is in the present day world. the currency thrown around the party isnt coin but rhetoric. The guy who room 101's winston is a master of rhetoric. Brainwashing winston with reason and classical conditioning is for him, O'brien is it?, prob the equivalent a making a million bucks in todays society. Being rich for a party member means being Socratesesque in the dialectic. I mean seriously, obrien cripples winston with mind bullets.

To Barazrov, the question is " how and why does the Party maintain control over oceania". And I need TWO arguments for HOW, and ONE for WHY. Among all of my arguments for HOW, which two would be the best for me to put it in my essay?

Please help.

I have the exact same essay topic on the 30th of October, same school maybe?

Just to let you know, JAMES :)

The three topics i am doing are:

#1
The Party constantly watches all citizens for any sign of rebellion or thought-crime, but tries to appear kind and concerned rather than ruthless and invasive. It adopts the protective, reassuring persona of 'Big Brother' and the slogan: "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" Part 1, Section 1, pg. 3

This paragraph/topic will contain thought police, telescreens, the spies.

#2
"Doublethink" is the major way the Party controls its members. Through "doublethink," people consciously accept anything the Party tells them, even if it contradicts something they already know.

This paragraph/topic will contain doublethink, destruction of past (winston's job), propaganda.

#3
The aim of Newspeak is to narrow the possible thoughts a person can have to a point where thoughtcrime will be impossible because there will be no language in which to understand it.

This paragraph will contain Newspeak

Regards,
And hope this helps.

Hey:p (not really sure who you are)

Your first two paragraphs are quite similar to mine. However, did you forget to analyse the reason why the Party wants to maintain the control over Oceania?

Thanks for your help.

Lads, be serious! :)

Your first two questions seems equal, and maddux_91 got arguments well.

Why Party wants to control Oceania? To gain absolute power and to remove any possibility of any possible resistance. Thought Police and Room 101 are main tools of that kind of control over Proles.

First two - Telescreens and Big Brother. This second might sound strange, but BB was adored by Proles and Party was hated; similar like Stalin and KGB. People liked him and believed he is doing the right thing so they never questioned him.

How and why does the Party maintain control over Oceania?
In the novel Nineteen Eighty-four, written by George Orwell, the protagonist Winston Smith shows the readers a predicted totalitarian state – Oceania. There, Big Brother, the virtual leader of the state, “is watching [everyone]” through numerous telescreens and dreadful Thought Police. The Party’s slogans, like “War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength.” are all written in Newspeak, which is imposed to the denizens daily lives as well as the method of Doublethink. All these aspects are employed by the Party to maintain its control over Oceania in order to retain the power upon people. For the very pure power, the Party keeps people under the function of Ministry of Love, and foists them using Newspeak with Doublethink to control their minds with confusion.

The Party always keeps an eye on its people by its fearful regime to preserve the despotism. This is done by the service of Ministry of Love. In the world of Nineteen Eighty-four, “it’s full of telescreens”. Through them, the Thought Police on behalf of Big Brother, the Party, and the Ministry of Love, spies on everyone in order to observe any heretical activity. Even a “nervous tic” of the Party’s announcement will not be neglected. As a result, citizens living in Oceania have to obey the Party’s dominance and to behave as orthodoxy as possible. Otherwise, the torture of the Ministry of Love and Room 101 will be their oblivions. Room 101 is considered as the “worst thing in the world”; it contains the “ultimate fear” of every single person. It is obvious that no one ever wills to face their biggest fear, even after brutal torturing. By encountering their unconquerable fears, they, who are considered heretical, will mightily accept every single orthodoxy idea. Thereby, the three stages of re-integration are totally completed. They have learnt, understood and accepted the Party fully as well as the Big Brother. With the love towards the Party and Big Brother, who will oppugn their regime?

The Party urges its denizens to use Newspeak which implicates Doublethink to improve the loyalty towards the Party without being able to think rebellious ideas. As you have noticed, the Ministry of Love actually deals with infinite torturing instead of love. This is called Doublethink in Newspeak. As an official language of Oceania, every Party members as well as proles are forced to learn Newspeak. The Party’s conspiracy of using Newspeak is to “narrow the range of thought”. Without words to express any ideas, no one, not a single person is able to transfer his own idea to another, neither an idea of defying the Party. Then, people are more and more orthodoxy so that they will absolutely adhere the beliefs of the Party, because “Orthodoxy means not thinking…. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.” Nevertheless, Doublethink is also employed to concert the reign over Oceania. It requires people to think things in two contradictory ways and believe both of them at the same time. Accordingly, everything is acceptable as everything will be concerned in its contradictory ways. So does the lie. The narrowed mind and nonstop accepting give the Party a hand on ruling the state otherwise.

The Ministry of Love, and the usage of Newspeak and Doublethink are promoted to manipulate the denizens of Oceania; the manipulation itself is for seeking power, the absolute power. The human nature destines that individuals will seek power “for [their] own [sakes]”. For the same reason, the Party longs for power. With the ascendancy, the Inner Party members have the access to sufficient and natural food, whereas the Outer Party and proles only have portioned artificial food; Martin, O’Brien’s slave, serves the wine for him, while the others drink cheap Victory Gin; Pornography is made for the Inner Party members, in contrast sex is considered immoral amongst the Outer Party members. All these privileges are permitted through the controlling of power. By exploiting power, “even gravity can be nonsense”; by indoctrinating Winston, assisted by power, “2+2=5” is believed. The omnipotence of power is what the Party admires, thus, the Party would do everything, including the control over Oceania, to retain the power.

For power, the Party maintains its control over Oceania; for maintenance of power, the Ministry of Love tortures, and Newspeak with Doublethink confuse. Fear is the weapon against the traitors, which is entirely employed by the Ministry of Love. A lack of vocabulary and a confused mind, as a result of using Newspeak and Doublethink, will do no good to any individual, but on the other hand, help the Party dominate the state. All for one, one for all, all these efforts are for retaining the power. “God is power”, in another word, the one who has power is godlike. Hence, the Party rules like the almighty.

This is my essay, and would anyone correct it for me if there is any grammar mistake or if any sentence doesn't make sense.

Any essay dealing with control must include the concept of Newspeak which Orwell explores.

What we see is a systematic removal of the language and thus the ability of people to communicate ideas, emotions etc.

What is left is what the government deems as necessary.

Let's understand that this doesn't happen right away but over a period of time - decades and centuries.

Through time language becomes less important. Look at our society and you would admit that language is not treated with tremendous respect - both the written and spoken word.

Look into Orwell's handling of Newspeak for your essay.

I reckon you're nearly there, but it tends to go off on different directions, the re-cover the ground again later. A good example is that you mention telescreens a few times, but I still don't know what they actually are - a two-way tv which cannot be turned off.

I think you should probably emphasise the economic conditions which mean that the proles will never be able to rise up in rebellion.

I think if you sat down with what you've got, added a couple of bits, subtract a couple of repetitions and cut & paste into more of a narrative style, you're right on the money.

The main question is why the control, then how and I think you dodge a bit to get full marks as it stands.

Good luck!

From my understanding of grammar and punctuation shouldn't it look like
“War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," "Ignorance is strength.”

or alternatively "War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength"

instead of your correction?

Hey?

It does:

“War is peace", "Freedom is slavery", "Ignorance is strength.”

The colour might be a bit confusing.

Now that I see it, the full stop should be outside the quotation marks as well.

Nevermind, I checked up on Wikipedia and you can use it both ways, American style of writing includes commas inside quotation marks whereas British puts them outside.

It is a good essay, but you really didn't hit the main questions. Include NewSpeak because that is one of the main parts of the book. Some of the sentences seem to be repeated and it could be shortened in order to get the point across. And i quote Bazarov, "Grade?"
