Archie Shepp begins recording his seminal album Fire Music.

A little description about the man. Archie Shepp, a jazz musician, has been at various times a feared firebrand and radical, soulful throwback and contemplative veteran. He was viewed in the '60s as perhaps the most articulate and disturbing member of the free generation, a published playwright willing to speak on the record in unsparing, explicit fashion about social injustice and the anger and rage he felt.

Carl Perkins leaves Sun Records for Columbia. "Pink Pedal Pushers," his first single for his new label, is released two weeks later.

A brief explanation about the man: rockabilly artist who became a one-hit wonder at the dawn of rock & roll's early years. His influence as the quintessential rockabilly artist has played a big part in the development of every generation of rockers to come down the pike since, from the Beatles' George Harrison to the Stray Cats' Brian Setzer to a myriad of others in the country field as well. After a long battle with throat cancer, Perkins died in early 1998.

R. Schmidt

These two paragraphs are referring to two different Carl Perkins. :)

The Carl Perkins who wrote "Pink Pedal Pushers" lived to be 65 years old, dying in 1998. And I think the date he left Sun Records is '58, not '85.

The second Carl Perkins died in 1958.

Yes Ash, it had something to do with the lyrics of the song..That even is also recorded as one of the act of cencorships in America's music history.

Some other music cencorship acts in the 60's recorded in history are:

October 1960, several radio stations refuse to play Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her," calling it the "Death Disk."

1962, New York Bishop Burke forbids Catholic school students from dancing to "The Twist." Burke considers R&B music, and its associated dances, to be lewd and un-Christian.

1965, Cleveland Mayor Ralph Locher bans all rock concerts in the city following a Rolling Stones performance.

June 1965, In June, radio stations across the country ban the Rolling Stones hit "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" because they believe the lyrics are too sexually suggestive.

Still in 1965, MGM Records alters the Frank Zappa song "Money" because it contains a sexual reference.

March 1966, A statement by John Lennon, comparing the popularity of the Beatles to that of Jesus Christ, results in wide-spread Beatles record burnings and protests. Lennon's comments regarding what he perceives as a decrease in Christianity's popularity with teens are taken out of context. He says, "We're more popular than Jesus now."

1967, Producers of the Ed Sullivan Show request that Jim Morrison change the lyrics to "Light My Fire" for The Doors' September appearance on the program. Morrison initially agrees to alter the lyric "Girl we couldn't get much higher" to a more innocuous phrase. During the live performance, Morrison sings the original lyric. The band is not invited back on the program.

1967, Radio programmers pass on Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" because the lyrics reference premarital sex and teenage pregnancy. Morrison cuts an alternative version with more acceptable lyrics.

1968, The Doors' single "Unknown Soldier" is banned from airplay at many radio stations because of its anti-war theme.

January 1969, New York police seize 30,000 copies of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Two Virgins album.
