I have to write an essay on how both the film Brazil and 1984 convey satirical ideas about our society. How do they mirror each other? If anyone has watched that movie can you help me out. I cant find much similarities between them except for the fact that the main characters were both tortured to insanity or to change their views. and i have no clue about them conveying satirical ideas about our society. So, if anyone has watched the movie can you help me out?

I sort of understand the satire in Brazil because it is shown in a comical way, but i have trouble understanding satire in 1984, so can someone comment on / provide examples of satire in 1984?

The whole thing could be considered satirical, but here are a few examples for you to play with:

Big Brother - the posters all over the place. Very Stalinesque.

Ministry of Peace - Ministry of Defence.

Parsons - reminiscent of another character Orwell liked to poke fun at; the scoutmaster type involved in every event.

Julia's celibacy league - Catholic church and its attitude to pre-marital sex.

Marriage - Orwell's take on marriage is some nasty satire.

I think the satire in 1984 might be a bit vicious to be obvious satire, but you should get a start with that.

Here's another one. I'm a little too lazy to provide a source but in China, around the period of the communist revolution, many children were turning in their parents, just like in 1984. If you look it up, I'm sure you'll find something.

I'm sure that had to have inspired part of 1984.

Pretty sure the book predates that kind of thing in China. The "revolution" is generally considered to have taken place in 1949.
