Just thought I'd get peoples thoughts on subliminal messaging in music.
Although not scientifically proven, this is a phenomenon which in my mind exists beyond reasonable doubt.
I will give some examples when I hear what others think, and also, if you happen to know of any, please mention them.

I'm pretty sure this is why I love DEVO so much. :p Among other reasons. I actually caught it once in one of their songs.
I am a happy victim of it.
Pretty awesome.

devo is wonderful, indeed.
i hope this thread doesnt turn into some kind of parental advisory alert to all the innocent music listeners of the world.
and to quote one of my favorite devo songs:
"Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
Happier than you and me
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
And it determined what he could see
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
One chromosome too many
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
And it determined what he could see
And he wore a hat
And he had a job
And he brought home the bacon
So that no one knew
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
His friends were unaware
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid
Nobody even cared"

I read a book on brainwashing a while ago and it talked about subliminal messages in music. I can't remember exactly what it said (apart from the good old "messages hidden in the song that can only be heard when it is played backwards" thing) and now I feel like reading it again :p

you know, devo is one of those bands that are genius in a cretin way...like, they make you wanna slap them.
and that song reminds me of this bad religion song:
"automatons with business suits swinging black boxes,
sequestering the blueprints of daily life
contented, free of care, they rejoice in morning ritual
as they file like drone ant colonies to their office in the sky..."
amazing how one thing can be said in so many tones...;)

Example, if you play Queen - Another one bites the dust - backwards;
"Another one bites the dust" says:
"Its fun to smoke marijuana"
If you remember the song, that line plays three times, consecutively. Repetitive reinforcement I suppose?
Sprinks, Yes, sometimes a message is recorded and purposely played backwards on the track. The example above is where played both backwards and forwards the words say two different things.
Does anyone else know of any examples?

Here is an excerpt I ripped off Wikipedia:
Stuessy's written testimony stated that:
Some messages are presented to the listener backwards. While listening to a normal forward message (often somewhat nonsensical), one is simultaneously being treated to a back-wards message (in other words, the lyric sounds like one set of words going forward, and a different set of words going backwards). Some experts believe that while the conscious mind is absorbing the forward lyric, the subconscious is working overtime to decipher the backwards message.

Not that I'm buying the whole subliminal message thing, but who listens to music backwards? why bother?

No one listens to music backwards.
To quote the excerpt ripped off Wikipedia;
"Some experts believe that while the conscious mind is absorbing the forward lyric, the subconscious is working overtime to decipher the backwards message."
Its funny you clarify that your not buying into the whole subliminal message thing, when undoubtedly this phenomenon exists on an audio and visual level.
For the research I have conducted, no solid scientific experimentation has been conducted to prove/disprove if subliminal messaging can affect your state of mind and your behaviour.
However, the fact that it exists is absolutely true. Numerous examples can be found almost everywhere you look, mostly in advertising.

I'm not saying I don't believe in subliminal messages, I'm talking about the fact that rock music puts subliminal messages in it's music:
Example, if you play Queen - Another one bites the dust - backwards;
"Another one bites the dust" says:
"Its fun to smoke marijuana"
If you remember the song, that line plays three times, consecutively. Repetitive reinforcement I suppose?
Since you brought up wiki, this quote is further down in the wiki article:
Some groups have made claims that subliminal messages can be found in various forms of popular entertainment, such as the supposed use of "backward messages" in rock and roll songs.
Many of these purported messages are Satanic; for example, if the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven" is played backwards, lyrics including "Oh here's to my sweet Satan" can supposedly be made out. [37]
Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" contains (backwards) a pro-marijuana message: "Stop to smoke marijuana", not "It's fun to smoke marijuana".[38]
These two messages have not been confirmed by the artists (and denied by some band members), and have not been proven to exist by fully respected sources.[39]

Thanks papayahed, I'm not a fully respected source but I've done my own research.
I believe that there is enough proof that the phenomenon exists, in rock/pop music.
Such as: a song by Eminem- "Hi my name is"
the chorus of the song goes,
"Hi my name is... my name is... my name is... my name is, Slim Shady.
Played backwards it says:
"It is slim, it's eminem, its eminem, its eminem"
In another part of the song it says "buy the album"
On a side note:
Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" contains (backwards) a pro-marijuana message: "Stop to smoke marijuana", not "It's fun to smoke marijuana".[38]
I've listened to this section of music played backwards and I disagree that it says "stop to smake marijuana".

I acknowledge that some musicians have intentionally inserted reverse messages in their songs (like the Eminem song you mentioned), but the vast majority of the "subliminal messages" are probably just coincidences.

Just thought I better clarify - The artist Eminem, is also know as "Slim Shady" or "Slim".

So how do you hear a song played backwards?
Silven

djy78usa, Yes, I agree.
Actually if you consider the logistics of making something like backmasking work, it boggles the mind.
What I find a little disconcerting, is when messages like Britteny Spears, song - Hit me baby one more time. Played backwards says "Sleep with me I'm not too young".
This is one of the most convincing examples of this phenomenon, where the message is following the "motif" of the artist.
