Now don't say, 'You miss me!'

You said I was a vagabond,
a stigma on the face of society;
You said I was good for nothing,
a lazy, lousy bum;
You said I was overbearing.
haughty, unrelenting;
You said I was an idle man,
a drone, a honey-sucker;
You said I was enigmatic,
God-fearing yet profane;
You said you couldn't love me,
You said I was past the age of love;
You said I was a worthless man,
devoid of culture and manners;
You said I was a cynic,
an eccentric, a skeptic;
You said all that came to your mind,
You said what appeared to you;
You said what every thorn would say
to a withered rose in fall;
You turned away your face
from me truculently,
mocking at my failures
least bothering to care
for the merits of my heart;
You said the world of heart be damned;
You said the world of mind is wealth;
You said love is not enough
to stay alive for both of us;
You looked higher up in the sky,
looking down upon the earthly vertebrate;
You said you were leaving me
and you finally left.
Now, you come back to me
when the world of my heart is lost;
when I am no more the devil I was;
when my mind has frozen with the cold of time;
sorry, I have nothing to please you,
nothing to give you in return,
nothing, nothing , nothing.
Live on as you have lived,
Leave me in peace to die;
Now don't say ,'You miss me!'
It's all over now!

This is beautiful, mazHur. I like all of it, but the image of the "earthly vertebrate" sticks in my mind. And I like the phrase, "You said what every thorn would say to a withered rose in fall." Such an apt, sharp yet poignant image. I only wish it had ended somewhat more happily. This reminds me of Rhett Butler's last words to Scarlett.
