Darkness Falls: A Gothic Poem in Five Stages

Stage one:

In a small and sparse apartment above a Grocery Store,
He walks the floor and tears his hair and sobs, “Nevermore!”
He holds in his arms a tear stained letter
And shrieks “Never shall I forget her!”
And in despair he hurls himself from the Fourth Floor windowpane.
And smashes his troubled head against the concrete sewer drain—
Darkness falls…

Stage Two

In a similar small apartment on the other side of town,
She shakes her head in hopeless sorrow, and wanders up and down.
Holding in her shaking hands a letter she casts from her on a whim,
Crying out, “Oh God! Never shall I forget him!”
She picks up the pistol with hands with hands now so unsteady
That the gun expels its bullet before she was even ready—
Darkness falls..

Stage Three

In a fine and flashy condo on the richer side of town,
He’s dressing for the evening with a flourish and a bow.
He smirks to himself at the idea of two letters sent by post,
Hoping that he has driven her from the one she loves the most.
And then his valet has him and note on flowered paper
That tells him she would rather face the Grim Reaper.
Darkness falls…

Stage Four

They arrive at the hospital at the same moment in time,
He with bandaged head and her beside of him in line;
With a bloody gash across her curls where the bullet tore its path.
They turn like vipers on each other , their voices full of wrath:
“Letter?” “What letter?” “You mean you didn’t write?”
Heads buzzing with love they walk off into the night--
Darkness falls…

Stage Five

He’s urged her chauffeur to drive him at top speed
To the hospital. Perhaps she lives! That is his plead.
Then, in utter shock he sees them, heads bandaged, arm in arm.
He jealousy boils over, his eyes glitter with alarm.
He raises his hat slowly, blows her a gentle kiss,
Puts his own pistol to his head and his shot does not miss—
Darkness falls…

This is brilliant, Uncle Pen. The suspense in every "stage" got me hooked. Definitely a favorite. ;)

This poem is very heartbreaking, Pen! The portrayal of tragic end of the young hearts with so full of love is really heartbreaking!!!:bawling: I'm moved by this poem. The rhyme and the ending of each stage seems like a play for me. :thumbs_up

Thanks, all. I wasn't certain about this form's acceptance, the "stages" part, but you have spoken! :)
