Does anyone know of any? Good books that take place and/or were written in the olden days, could've won an award, etc. I'm just starting to get tired of Hemingway, Faulkner, and the like, and thought it's about time I expand the circle of writers I read anyway.
This thought occurred to me when I read the children's book Carrie's War by Nina Bawden. I'd never heard of that book or author before, but I instantly loved that book.

I don't know, taking place before 20th century?

I dunno about being under-rated or lesser known, but I strongly recommend the two writings listed here (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showpost.php?p=51802&postcount=138). As well as the Golden Pot by E. T. A. Hoffmann
And, I'm sure you could find some others by browsing the whole thread - What's your fav. quote? (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4&page=1&pp=30)
C.S. Lewis, mostly reknowned for his children's books, wrote also a lot of non-fiction inspirational, mystical, and somewhat philosophical works, which I would recommend to anyone. I suggest especially The Abolition of Man, Four Loves, and Screwtape Letters.

My favorite book: The Wars by Timothy Findley. Absolutely stunning. Although it's set in WWI it's definitely not your typical war story. At least not in terms of style and impact. This book blew me away when I read it and I've been recommending it to people ever since. Definitely a must-read.
