Monte Cristo Mood and Tone

I am having a little trouble identifying the mood and tone of the book since it is so volatile, could anyone please help me out. Thank you.

I'd say the mood stays dark. Tone changes over the course of the novel--starts righteous and moves towards the pedantic. Ultimately it becomes a warning against the pitfalls of vengeance.

The mood becomes very dark towards the end, but at the very end of the book, the mood is quite upbeat in comparison to the rest of the book.
