Sonnet in Flat Reflection
I refuse to allow the sordid sight others seem to see,
To be a true reflection of the person that I am.
In fencing myself in with facades who am I trying so hard to be?
The truth is that I resolve to refuse to be a shallow sham.
Caught in twisted strands of twilight, the moon becomes an eye—
A hurried, hassled goose sends a honking wave.
For better or for worse someone somewhere observes our passing by—
Do I impress men or look to God alone my soul to save?
Passion’s broken promises build up pressure; the boiling point is near—
Should I return the wrath with righteous venom of my own?
The garden this year was lovely, but my thoughts are now very clear—
You cannot reap a seed that you have never sown…
Hush now, thundering pulses, slow down, breathe deep:
They that bother me tonight are not losing any sleep!
