Folklore

I'm looking for books on folklore and considering the wide range of material available, I have no idea where to begin and which books are the best. I'm especially interested in northern Europe and japanese folklore. American folklore doesn't strike me as very interesting for the moment, but feel free to rise the status it has in my mind.
