I'm currently reading The Virgin Suicides, so that would work for me.

I'd like to nominate Bram Stoker's short story anthology, Dracula's Guest. "The Judge's House" and "The Burial of the Rats" being my favorites in this edition.

It's not a holiday Baz, but an event.

Actually its the ancient Irish Pagan festival of Samhain celebrating the end of harvest. Because the ancient Irish believed that this was also the time of year when the veil between the living snd the dead, they celebrated this night with bonfires, masks to mimic the evil spirits in hope to prevent their crop being poisoned or distroyed. they would also carve out turnip (now pumpkins) and leave candles in them out side their homes so that evil spirits and faery folk would leave them in peace. They use to gift their neighbours with food on this night also.
so not a holiday, or an event but an ancient festival and celebration. :p And it was still taken very seriously until the age of commercialisation!

I have almost completed The Virgin Suicides and would love to discuss this book, but I am not sure it is right for a Halloween reading. It isn't a very long book, so it would be easy to finish by the date set - it has that going for it.

Whatever all of you decide will work for me. ;)

The woman in Black is amazing. Saw it on stage and i have never been so terrified in all my life. A horror movie doesnt even have that effect on me. The book is brilliant!

I voted for Dracula's Guest because I nominated it and because it is in public domain making it free to everyone, but this T.S. Eliot book intrigues me greatly. Hmmm, I'll be interested to see what wins.

I voted for the woman in black of course!

It is not a horror story or a tale of terror, yet the events build up to a horrifying climax and instil a sense of horror. It relies on atmosphere, a vivid sense of place, on hints and glimpses and suggestions, on what is shadowy, heard and sometimes only half-seen, to chill the reader's blood to the marrow and make reading the book alone at night inadvisable for the faint-hearted.
