I am trying to find a short story I read as a teenager that was so well-written, it "stayed" with me.
I thought the author was Edgar Allan Poe and the title, "The Ravine", but I cannot seem to find it.
It was about a serial killer stalking and killing women who lived alone. A woman had to cut through a ravine to get home. She hears noises and thinks she is being followed. But is it just her overactive imagination? She finally reaches her home, heart pounding, hands shaking, to open her door and be safe. She enters and locks her door thinking she is safe and breathes a sign of relief, when, from behind her, she hears a man's cough - he is inside her house !!!
That's all I remember. Can anyone help me locate this suspenseful story??
