One commits hubris, use it like that I.E. as a crime, not as a verb.

Neither. He committed hubris by.

Or, his actions displayed an act of hubris.

Or, by doing x, he committed hubris.

edit - forgot to add, it can also be used sort of like a mental condition, like, never had I seen such a severe case of hubris in my life, etc.

similar to how one is capable of altruism, one is capable of hubris.

however, though one can be altruistic, I have never heard of one being hubristic.

i think one suffers from hubris, rather than commits it ;)

Hubris is a moral flaw and literally means 'presumption' or 'over-confidence'. In context of tragedy, as explained by Aristotle, hubris is the miscalculation on part of the hero regarding his own limitations and leads to his haemartia or 'tragic flaw'. It is an abstract noun.

Hubris can very well be an act - for instance, Agamemnon stepping on the carpet according to his wife's wish in Aeschylus's Agamemnon.

something can be an act of hubris, yes - but you wouldnt say 'he committed hubris' like you wouldn't say 'he committed arrogance' or 'he committed excessive pride'

Actually, if we were to read some literary criticism in which hubris is treated as the great sin of excessive pride -- to the extent of putting oneself on the level of the gods -- we would find some very literate people using the expression "he/she committed hubris" or pride because the term is being used as the name of a sin. You may want to google or copernic the phrase.
