The sonnet is almost too forlorn
& which sort to employ is never easy,
A Petrarchan would be such an intense form:
The Pushkinian always makes me feel queasy.
Both Spenser & Byron would well mourn
A Miltonic lack of use of volta,
Unless an 'about face' you would warn
& make me hesitate & falter.
The sestet has just now arrived
Without a noticeable change in pace;
Yet now I am just as well subscribed
To end my poem with no disgrace.
Like I should have aught else to fear
I'll go with the scheme of Shakespeare.
