This year I'm going to write a work on different ways that Mormons are presented in literature and movies. It's quite easy with movies cause I've already found a few. However, I need help with books. Specifically, I'm looking for novels, short stories, dramas that show Mormons in either a good or a bad way, for example, one of the characters is a Mormon. I've come across plenty of titles, but I don't know which ones are worth reading. The author that pops up a lot when I check different lists of such books is Orson Scott Card. What else could you recommend?

Except for that silly HBO series I know of nothing with Mormons. Out of curiosity I'd like to see a list of literature that features Mormons.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Valley of Fear. The second half of the book deals with Mormons in a off light.

Do you mean Big Love? I actually want to see it. Can you say something more about it - why is it silly?
As for the lists, here are the two sites I found:

The only book by Doyle I know of that deals with Mormons is A Study in Scarlet. As far as I know, this one shows them unfavorably.

Edward Abby in The Monkey Wrench Gang has one (out of four main characters), but one which the church would no doubt disclaim.

Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer; might be more journalism than literature.

Thanks for the list Morwen. Most television is silly. Now I've only seen bits and pieces of Big Love and the underlying motif is that of bigomy, the hidden wives of one one man and their family dynamics. Now as far as I know, there isn't bigomy going on in Mormon cultures. At least Mormons have reputiated bigomy. I would think bigomists are rare and the show is striving for sensationalism.

I'm Mormon myself and I would say try to stay away from things like Big Love if you are really trying to find truth in the religion. but I say kudos for wanting to educate yourself reading negative and positive are the best ways to go, I would say finding something negative will be fairly easy but if you want something positive try to read something by a leader of the church. Good hunting either way! :)

Zane Gray - "Riders of the Purple Sage."
Unfavorable light. Story takes place in 1871, a couple of decades before the LDS received the revelation that polygamy was wrong.
