Let's list all the food we were scared to eat until we tried it...I've got a lot of them. The first is Pimento Cheese. People in my family would eat it and I wasn't having any part of it. Then for some reason, I tried it, and I couldn't get enough. I even like to make my own. I've turned two people on so far to Pimento Cheese. They were skeptics at first (I mean look at it):

Many can be listed here..since my strongest of the 5 senses is the sense of smell (i have a theory for why is that but it would be off topic) i used to avoid a long list of food which smell badly (at least to me)..yep..and feta cheese used to be on top of that list..tried it 2 years ago and it actually tastes good..now i eat it on a regular basis ermmm while holding my breath (you know not literally) :D
Shalot, i see what you mean..it looks like someone with a severe case of indigestion has puked over a slice of bread :D

Snails...never thought I'd try them. But they were SO good!! :D
Manolia, do you really not like the smell of feta?
I'm slightly obssessed with cheese, used to drive my scottish flatmates crazy if I ever brought home a piece of camembert (which doesn't really smell too bad).
I've never tried Pimento cheese...I wouldn't know where to look for it!

Another one: Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips....
How nasty does that sound. I never would eat one until a few years ago and now they're not so bed. I prefer them over BBQ chips...which was all I would eat when I was little. Salt and Vinegar just sounded like something that you should not eat as a snack food.

It doesn't sound nasty at all. I love salt and vinegar potato chips. :D

Okay then, Pork Rinds.
I never ate one until this year. They're actually not that bad.

I ate a palatable and scrumptious food which is from Japan in a reputedly high-class restaurant.Nay,it didn't,it is a basic one. That was occurred two months ago,you should perceived that Japanese food is quite prohibitive.Eating is not my paramount thing nor the thing which I should relish.
If someone could give me knowledge, then I shall wolf these knowledge up.

Yep i don't :D My mom always place it at the opposite side of the table because she doesn't want to destroy my appetite and she is always anxious about how much i eat (she wants me to gain some weight ;)).
You know i am not the only one who can't stand that smell..my best friend has the same eccentricity concerning that cheese :D.
Regarding snails..they taste great..snails are considered a delicacy in many parts of greece..we have a certain way of cooking snails in crete..χοχλιοί βουβουριστοί..if you ever visit the island ask for that dish, i am sure you are going to love it :)..and αχινοί (sea urchins)..have you ever tasted that? Many people consider it disgusting (since they are served raw..but they are yummy!!).

Let's list all the food we were scared to eat until we tried it...Now, there's an interesting question... and the fact is that I am prepared to try most dishes at least once these days. I love trying new exotic dishes, and have on occasion ended up with equally exotic reasons for an upset stomach
Snails...never thought I'd try them. But they were SO good!! Yes, I agree. It sounds terrible, but is in fact quite good.
As for the exotic dishes,I have tried crocodile and and snake (don't know what sort) and found it very much to my liking.

I was a very picky eater as a child. The one dish that always stands out is Baklava. My aunt made it at one of our family gatherings, but she told me it was mincemeat pie. Now, for a picky eater who refuses to try just about anything new, mincemeat pie does not sound very appetising (although I do ejnoy it now). My mom eventually talked me into trying it and I loved it. Baklava is still one of my favorite desserts.
Seafood, of any type, is another example. I wouldn't eat fish until I was about 12 or 13 years old. Now fresh seafood is one of the main things I look forward to everytime I go back to Florida.

I had gator meat a couple of years ago. Or it might have been crocodile...
the seafood dept at one of our stores was selling it for tailgating parties when the college football team was playing one of our many major SEC rivals the Florida Gators. The guy at the counter said it tasted like chicken. I tried it for the first time, and it was okay. It wasn't anything great, and that might have been because of the way we prepared it.
I've never had snake though, but I've heard that it also tastes like chicken.

I can eat pretty much anything but sushi was the one I feared the most. Then Out in Rio with some friends they ordered a big plate of various sushi's and sashimi's, I discovered I loved it even the slices of octopus tentacles.

Cow tongue tacos. Yum.
When I was a kid you couldn't get me anywhere near meat...so its crazy that I love tongue.
That last statement sounds a bit...odd.
I meant, well I'm sure you got what I meant.:):thumbs_up

I couldn't do sushi until a recently either. And the ginger that comes with it looked so unappetizing and I didn't know what it was but then it turned out to be pretty good too.

It happened me many times, last one was mushrooms.
...because she doesn't want to destroy my appetite and she is always anxious about how much i eat (she wants me to gain some weight).
I remember in university years, when I went out in the morning, and came to home at evening, my mother used to say: Heey, you lost weight, come on, eat! They can recognize the difference even in one day. :)
Disagree on Feta, it's so good, especially with salad. But agree if you say katsika!(cheese)

Wow, seems you can't stand the stuff! ;) So I guess you haven't tried καρπούζι (red melon) and feta?
Hmmm...Crete! Haven't been there yet, though I want to go! And I'll ask for that dish when I get there :)
I had sea urchin this year for the first time, but it was with spaghetti so the only taste I could get was of the sea! Can't say I actually tasted anything in particular. I've never had them raw straight out of the sea (with lemon right?).

You mean katsikisia feta? From goat's milk? Love that too :D

Have you tried mastiha? It's produced from mastic tree (I think that's the correct translation.
It's sort of like ouzo...actually no, its similar in that it is clear but the taste is different. But it's nice!!

For me it was the middle age discovery of octopus. I do not like eating obviously intelligent invertebrates, but I love sea food, so now I apologize before masticating, and enjoy my salad with relish.;)

Since I have lived here in California by myself for the past year, my mom has always been worried that I wasn't eating enough (the whole university and studying issue :) ). I admit I have been picky but I always eat!
So I went to Guatemala and thought I would lose a bunch of weight because of my options in food choices. But I have never eaten so well in my life!! And it was all good! Mom looked at the pictures and she was like, "Oh here I thought you were so skinny...look at your belly! I'm not worried anymore!"
One thing that I would not eat were avocados, mainly in a guacamole dip. My mom would always make it and I'd never eat it. But while I was in Guatemala, half the time the meals had virtually a serving of guacamole. I ate so much of it there that now that I am home I can't get enough of it!!
They had this really interesting hot dog thing too....grilled buns, hot dog, cabbage, mayonnaise, ketchup and guacamole...sounds like vomit I know, but it was one of the best hot dogs I've had!

Swedish Meatballs. I never had any desire to eat that dish (the look of the gravy always got to me), but I was so hungry at work one day (they were selling that at the cafeteria), and I gave in and decided to try it. They are something that I really like now.
Venison. I have only had it once in my life and that was about 18 years ago or so. We were supposed to take a bag lunch along for a field trip, but the teacher decided that the class should eat lunch before we left. The boy sitting at my table told me he was eating Summer Sausage. Then he said that he would trade a couple of slices for a couple of my chocolate chip cookies. Well, I LOVE Summer Sausage. So I couldn't resist the offer. Now, I thought it tasted slightly different than what I was used to. But it was really good. When I finished the last slice he said to me, with a devilish grin, "That was deer meat". I swear that I thought I was going to gag. I think it was more the shock of him doing that to me. I wasn't prepared to eat Bambi! Anyway, I will admit, as I have always admitted to this, I really kind of liked it. Yet, I have never eaten another piece of venison or anything like that since then. I just can't do it. I have my reasons for it. But they are my crazy reasons that I will keep to myself. :) But I will keep eating summer sausage, though. :p
On the other hand, my father tried to get me to try aligator meat a long time ago, but there is no way that I could try that. Just the look of it was bad.
I also will NEVER try shrimp. Nobody could make me try that. The site of shrimp, in any way that it is prepared, makes me cringe.
So those are two things that I never want to try and that I KNOW I will never try! :)

:) Let me tell,
Once I ve bought two bottle of mastiha from Xios, but at home
discovered that it is a 'liqueur' mastiha. I was dissappointed when I read that on label but it was the best liqueur I ve ever tasted.
I am still have curiosity how the real mastika taste, keen on to try it.

I also really hated apples.
My dad would buy a bunch (they were something rare when i was a young girl) and they would just sit in the fridge because i wouldn't eat them.
But i like them now, they're yummy!

I've eaten guacamole only a few times, and I wasn't that crazy about it, but it wasn't horrible. I think it was the GREEN color that made me not want to eat it. But, I do like avocados now, but I don't have them that often. There is this sandwich place that uses an avocado spread on one of their sandwiches and it is awesome. That and the sprouts and the cucumbers and tomatos make it the best turkey sandwich ever.
