She is alone, having just recently moved to Halifax, NS, to begin a PhD programme and won't see your messages until - hopefully - she's well enough to resume accessing the internet but I'm confident she'd be enormously cheered by any words of caring she receives from you.

Her condition will almost certainly require an operation. She is in some distress right now but is handling it as bravely as she has handled several difficult situations that have come her way.
