Hey,

I've just read Disco Pigs (and sucking Dublin).

Admittedly I was initially drawn to Sucking Dublin, I think because it was more familiar in terms of its construction. The vernacular used in Disco Pigs was at first off-putting, unlike Sucking Dublin. Dialogue occurred as a past narration between characters that existed only through the words of Pig and Runt, unlike Sucking Dublin which allows the audience to interact with the separate characters as entities within their own right.

Having re-read Disco Pigs I've really enjoyed it, and these very characteristics that were off putting, are now proving the most interesting features

I'd be interested to hear of any thoughts, or particular interests with Disco Pigs or comments on Edna Walsh.

I've now watched the film (go to youtube to see it in fragments).

As its own entity the film is very provocative, thoughtful etc, but it does deviate from the text (I'm not at issue with this). What is interesting though, is that Runt is portrayed very sympathetically and even, at times, as a victim to Pig.

When re-reading the play, it is noticeable that Runt is the owner of some of the very lines, which in the film Pig says and compounds the innocent reading of Runt.

I find this tension very interesting and a spring board for thinking about how each character should be read in relation to the other.

Any thoughts?
