'What is she doing?!'
'Put it down, you'll hurt yourself!'
'I think that's supposed to be the idea'
'Stop it Lorna, just stop it!'. Mary, her young sister, cried uncontrollably.
'Someone look after the girl!' One of the women turned to Mary and engaged her in a game of '21 questions'.
'Do you think she'll do it?'
'Oh, yeah!' Janey hissed back at Sarah, both anticipating the screams and the gushing blood.
I knew Lorna wouldn't make the cut. She had positioned the chopping knife at a strange angle, meaning she'd have to turn it to be able to cut. She was also pressing it not quite on the jugular vein. This was merely another showy spectacle, for her birthday.
'Please darling, drop the knife,' her mother pleaded.
And after some gasping breaths, she dropped the knife to the floor and the wrist that had clung it so fiercely became limp.
Everyone rushed over to her but her mother pushed through the crowd and took her up to her bedroom.
We, the 7 young guests of the party, exchanged looks. Lorna had finally cracked. I even saw some of the adults meet our glances- they too knew Lorna's nature, her wild sinister extravagance. Whenever Lorna would finally kill herself, she'd do it with an audience. Of that we were certain. It seemed now that it would be an audience of fellow patients and doctors.
