Is Revelation Rhyme?

(written 11:00 A.M, November 17, 2000)

Is revelation rhyme,
Tinkling bells of loveless word,
In which we revel, chime,
And elevate absurd
To most sublime?

Muhammad might agree.
A stack of palm leaves, Surah,
Of which we are most sure.
How blessed is that tree
Whose foliage lends vesture
To bare uncertainty,
And fans to flame our fervor!
Such verses have appeal
To donkeys, as an edifying meal.

Men may dispute. At least, the words agree.
How sad! The word "Truth"
Does not quite rhyme with "Proof",
And leaves the door ajar for heresy,
(But then, God speaks no English.
We must not take our prophets from the British!)

Such irony, that Sound, Sabda Brahman,
Resounds in unsound doctrines.
Compassion is in Him
of Many Names, our Hymn,
Who makes epiphany
In resonance,
And turns a winking eye
To blasphemy.
Lo! We chant, and sin
Recoils trembling
From the Numinous Presence.
Behold! Divinity
Becomes the Hum within Humanity,
That mantric bee, distilling sweetness.
'Tis no idolatry
To bow to din.

Perhaps the most beneficent
And merciful of all,
That nameless Oracle,
Who pardons every question
As rhetorical;
Proclaims us innocent,
After the fall.
Such scripture is our bastion:
A sound, effective tool
To ward off evil.
