Disclaimer: I don't believe in astrology. This is just for one of my astronomy assignments.
Did you know that your zodiac sign is not the one that you read in newspapers? I've got a little thing called a star locator that can also calculate your real starsign. Tell me your birthday month and day and I'll calculate it for you.
Any Aprils? Late April birthdays are not Taurus, as I had thought I was, but Aries.
What do you think?

Though I do not take astrology seririously or as reliable, I am happy with my current zodiac sign and think it is fitting, but I am currious to see what this new calculation will put me as.

I do believe in astrology, but, I dont go to the astrologers to ask about my future; it will be come a vicious cycle.
Here its a big deal to have the horoscope made, especially amongst the Hindus; it is used every where, like, matching the horoscopes before a marriage to see if the couple are compatible with each other, to know about the career or personal life, etc.
Astrology is a science and it involves calculations, it is quite accurate. To make a horoscope one need to know the time of the birth and the place as well, along with the DOB.
My parents have got my horoscope made, and they consult the astrologer about my future. Sometimes I ask them what did he say, but mostly I avoid knowing. It is my curiosity that makes me ask, just to see or verify what he said will come true or not.
As per my birth date, my zodiac is Aries and not Leo (the month I was born).

Seriously, have a trouble believing in the astrological thingsies but they can be pretty much fun to have a look at for the sake of laughter.
Can you also tell the characteristics of the zodiac sign I possess as well? They seem to vary so much in different books. :p

I should probably say that the farther away you are from the mid-latitude area of the Northern Hemisphere, the more wrong I'll be. My star locator is for latitude 40*N. So, this would be your sign ONLY IF you were born in this latitude.
Dark Muse: Aquarius
JBI: at Julius Caesar's time, the stars hadn't moved so much, so his star sign would be correct.
Maddie -- you're right about it becoming a vicious cycle. My astronomy professor says that he's had people run out of the classroom crying when they figured out their real sign.
LadyW: my star locator says Gemini too, but again that's most likely because you're higher up than I am.
Sleepy: you're a Leo
Pensive: Scorpio, and yeah, they do get pretty funny!! I wish I could tell you the characteristics, but alas, my data is inconclusive :D.
amalia: Gemini
Niamhie, you're right between Capricorn and Sagitarius. Ergo, you've characteristics of both :D.

I thought this is the thread where I find out that if I am, for example, Libra, you tell me that if I cross my eyes and look at the symbol/constellation from a strange angle I can see that the symbol really depicts something interesting, i.e two girls having hot lesbian sex.
Oh well, you can't have it all...

*blinks* As my professor said, if you can look at the Virgo constellation and see a woman lying on her side with a leg in the air and wheat in her hand, you've got a GREAT imagination!
How does one get their hands on one of these star locators..?
Frankly, I'm unsure. I bought mine from the college bookstore but my professor says they're available worldwide. Perhaps online? Only make sure to get one that's for your latitude -- that's why I said earlier that these would be your horoscopes only if you were born in 40 degrees latitude or thereabouts.

Cancer? awwwww, I hate to make waves but a hydra sounds way cooler then a cancer.:D
Actually, I remember getting my zodiac chart done and it said I was on the cusp of Cancer/Leo but something about the sun and moon both being in Leo.....yadda yadda yadda, I don't remember it all.

Well, sunsigns don't run monthly - they run in the cycle based on dividing the circle by 12. For instance I am late in the month of Feb and considered a Pisces and I have known many March Pisces. The last date is sometimes the 21st or the 23rd of the months, depending; then they extend into the next month to the same of smiliar date to begin the next sign ....I used to play around calculating charts - it was great fun; I have a set of the complicated tables to chart the various planets. Not only does your sun sign count, but you have to take into account the entire chart of a person (all the planets that extent out from the central position of the sun), also the the exact time a person was born can lend more accuracy to the chart. The year therefore is vitally important. Then when you gather all this information, the various planetary positions are calculated as having relationships such as square, trine, composite, opposition, etc. These represent various relationships or conflicts/compatibility, within the person's own chart or personality. One can also cross two charts to look into compatibility and problem areas or conflicts within relationships between two individual personalities.
It seems to me, andav ya, if your 'star locater' were truly accurate, all the charts and books I own would be useless. Where did you get this star locator...who says this is actually accurate? I am not questioning you, but the validiy of the device has me curious. Why have they been recalculated? and by whom?

You most likely are on the cusp...what was your date again? Many people are on the cusp. Hydra is cool, but what is it? I think cancer is the crab. I guess no one wishes to be a crab, but like crabs - they are interesting and can be on land or in the sea...I am a water sign and I associate with those being one myself, but a fishy; but Leo is the lion. You seem more like a Lion to me, Papaya.
The moon is vitally important. In my case my moon is in cancer; cancer rules the moon...odd, because anytime there is a full moon that is my best day...and I never howl at the moon. Pisces are fish and they can't howl.
Another very important feature of ones full sign or chart would be the the two postions of Sun and then Mercury...for instance if you sun is Cancer and your Mercury is also in Cancer within 9 degrees of each other than this enhances your sun sign - strengthens it. Within 2 or 3 degrees I believe it is very rare and can indicate a diety.....
....been sometime since I delved into all this stuff but it is fun; complicated to calculate but great fun and so often it actually does seem true of the person or the relationships.

Oh, no, no, very likely yours are as accurate as can be, especially if you've got the real charts and all. I put a disclaimer on the first page...let me quote it here:
I should probably say that the farther away you are from the mid-latitude area of the Northern Hemisphere, the more wrong I'll be. My star locator is for latitude 40*N. So, this would be your sign ONLY IF you were born in this latitude.
Two thousand years ago the sun sign in the paper would have been accurate, but since that time they've shifted just one sun sign.

10 march please (chuck norris sign) !!!

Ok Taurus,
Oh, no, no, very likely yours are as accurate as can be, especially if you've got the real charts and all. I put a disclaimer on the first page...let me quote it here:
My book of charts is older but I think it is pretty accurate. The charts of the basic signs such as sun, moon, mercury, mars, venus...and so on...are not too difficult to look up; then once you find the chart say:
Sun in Cancer
Moon in Virgo
Mercury in Pisces
and so on...
Then you look up the various charactersistic for each planet, such as above: Sun in Cancer, Moon in Virgo. Ok, work is far from done. One then refers to another book about composites. There could be two water signs such as Cancer and Pisces in the chart - they would be Trine...if my memory serves me right - you see they are the water signs, however they must be within 9 degrees. There are trines, opposites, conjunctions, sextiles, etc...it is all mathematical. So then you see what 'trines' indicate - usually compatibility/attaction, being of the same - water. Let's put it this way, looking up the chart is not difficult, but checking out all the characteristics does take considerable time. I imagine now they can do all that with computers.;)
Two thousand years ago the sun sign in the paper would have been accurate, but since that time they've shifted just one sun sign.
Wow, that is interesting though. True that they have shifted. hummm..makes me rethink the whole thing now.
:D Leo, according to my latitude.
I don't know what latitude we are at actually. I must look that up. humm..I get latitude mixed up with longitude. I better consult my globe or a map.
Aquarius, though again, according to my latitude.
:D Scorpius! I'd hazard a guess that this one is correct, since it's one sign off from what you thought it was.
Depends on how close you are to the dates. I would venture to guess, Eye, that you possess characteristic of each. Hey, eye, you will have to find some fried scorpian to serve up on your profile page.
Have you done your own chart Janine? I had mine done once and it was pretty neat.
Yes, and my family and some friends, also. I used to keep a whole file of the charts, but I really was the only one who knew the full significance of them or the interpretations; because as I said above, it takes a great deal of time to look up all the various aspects of a chart. If you have your exact birthdate you can also look up your 'rising sign'... I forget now what is mine. I don't truly know how to look that up. There is much in astrology I don't know how to utilize. I only scratch the surface with this stuff, but it is funny and uncanny how so often it actually does fit the person.
That is cool, Papaya, did it seem the chart was accurate as to your own personality? I would be curious about that. Did you do it online or at an actual astrologer's....haha...I can picture one with a pointed hat and stars on it.;)

Yeah, I learned about this at an observatory-it's because the Earth shifts in different tilts over time, thus screwing up where the constellations appear to be.
I'm a Taurus according to the newspapers, but I'm actually an Aries, apparently.
And then there's a new guy-Ophiuchus. I just love that name.
But I am indifferent to astrology, so it doesn't matter.

I have seen those online and wondered about them. Did they charge you or was it free? I guess the calculate it according to computers. Did they give you your chart?... such as:

Mercury in Leo

What you read in the newspaper, or what you read in general is just a tiny part of your birth chart, called the Sun sign. There's Moon sign, Venus sign, Mercury sign, Mars Sign, Jupiter sign, and so on...There's also your rising sign or your ascendant which is critical in predicting your future. All those make the very unique you. The placements of each planet in every sign are the make up of your character.
Sun in Pisces
Moon and Jupiter in Capricorn
Venus and Mercury in Aquarius
Mars, Ascendant, Saturn and Pluto in Scorpio
Uranus in Sagittarius
