All laying around in their bean bag chairs, listening to In a Gadda Davida and making a half-hearted attempt at reading Peter Orlovsky's Clean A@@hole Poems & Smiling Vegetable Songs by the glow of their lava lamps.:D

Beat generation fan here, especially Kerouac and some early Ginsberg. Kerouac is in fact my favorite author and he wrote my favorite book, The Dharma Bums

The only thing I've read is On The Road which I enjoyed, especially the part where they trashed that guy's Cadillac while driving it to Chicago.
The Beat authors sparked my initial interest in literature when I was starting adolescence and possessed the idealistic state of mind it takes to appreciate such musings. For that initial spark I'm grateful, however I find the material of that era too immature and empty for it to hold any weight with me today.
Have you ever read “When I was Cool” by Sam Kashner? It’s very amusing, if not entirely true

I am an avid fan of the beat generation, it is the classic American literature stories that drew me to become the reader I am today.
As for the beat generation, Jack Kerouac is an amazing author but in all honesty "on the road" was a hard read for anyone who doesn't understand his writing style of "spontaneous bop prosody."
I would highly recommend "the dharma bums" as a good first read .
By all means, DO read work of the beat generation.
The dharma bums is entertaining being myself a Theravada Buddhist... I laughed over his ice cream koan.
I love the religious side of the beat generation..:p
