Cold Mountain

How would you compare the film version of _Cold Mountain_ to the book? What were some of your reactions to the changes that were made in the film version, and do you feel those changes were effective/necessary?

Sorry, I haven't read the book but in the film version Niclole Kidnman looked as though she stepped right out of Vouge magazine.

I think the character of Ruby was completely spoiled by Renee Zellweger, who was grossly miscast in that role. She played her like a virago, while in the book she was an honest, no-nonsense, hardworking girl.

On the other hand, Jude Law brought a lot of dignity to his role and did justice to the character.

It's been a long time since I read the book or saw the movie. But I don't recall if the old woman he meets along the way, that ministers to his wounds and heals him, off in some covered caravan kind of thing - did that make it into the movie?

It was a magnificent book. It seems it alludes in some ways to The Odyssey. It was a tall order to get its depth conveyed on film, but I remember on balance being impressed with the result.

Just finished the book a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I am currently trying to find a copy of the movie...just hoping it wont disappoint.

:lol:I thought this same exact thing. She looked too groomed and model-like to be up there in the cabin in the cold in the woods; I said "oh come on, please, give me a break"...forget realism altogether on this one. Also, sort of cold in that cabin to reveal ones skin, don't you think?

just watched the movie...kind of bland. not a terrible adaptation though...could tell it was based off a novel though. im glad i read it first too, because i have a feeling that the sparatic organization would of messed me up
