I love literature... but as I'm in school still, I've only been able to/had the time to read what I've been given... it's good stuff though, Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Wilde to name a few... but as I finish school, and head off to uni, I will have a lot more time for good books... so I'm asking you, what is some of your favourite, or the best, literature... novels, poems, plays... that you know of? Just to give me an idea of what I want to read, I want to make an ultimate list of literature to read... so what should go at the top?

Visit threads like Your 10 favorite, Top ten classics or something like that and just pick one :D

I think that while attending university, you will have less time than you imagine for independent reading. Should you take literature courses, you will soon learn what to read, either through reading lists or through lectures and discussion.I would imagine that your own tastes or interests will lead---sometimes in mysterious ways---to a succession of books and authors beginning with those you "study" that will encompass a large part of what is important.
Cheers,
John

Speaking from personal experince I have to agree jgweed, in University, you will have less time for your own personal reading. But if you take some good English courses you may be introduced to some new and wonderful books.

I dont know, my friend in college read over 50 books in a year at college. Then again his major is in english, think what you will.

You read like 10 thick books per year per course (generally), but that doesn't include any side information you may use, such as literary criticism.

I agree. you may not have as much time as you think for independant reading in university. but if you like Shakespeare you might like Christopher Marlowe.

I'm in agreement with most of the folks here, regarding the lack of independent reading time at uni, but something I do sometimes is take up a poet who interests me and try to read a little every day. Poems typically are much more manageable, and there's no reason to read the complete works if you don't want to/don't have time.

I suggest plays. Short and easy to read. It's satisfactory knowing you've completed a whole work in only half an hour. :)

My main focus during university days is mainly on reading the plays/novels/books that are related to my studying. I still try to squeeze in a book for pleasure. You can try doing that. Start with a small book, maybe a collection of short stories or something. You can try reading it right before you go sleep, at least this way you'll put aside for a while what you've been studying all day. I personally read for 45 minutes or something before I sleep, I also read in the bus on my way to college, and in the free time between lectures. Just try something small and easy. Don't start with hard, complicated stuff cuz it'll wear you out with all the school work you already have to do. Good luck :D
